Jesup Memorial Library Facts

Founded:
In 1875 the Bar Harbor Village Library was located in a building on Ledgelawn Avenue with 176 volumes and $20. The present library located on Mount Desert Street was designed by architects Delano and Aldrich of New York and built by local Chester Hodgkins in 1909. Mrs. Maria Jesup presented the Jesup Memorial Library to Bar Harbor on August 30, 1911 in memory of her husband, Morris Ketchum Jesup.

Collections:
Approximately 30,000 volumes, more than fifty magazine and four newspaper subscriptions, backfiles of many magazines, large collection of unabridged audio books, videos and compact discs.

Maine Vertical File Index: a compilation of a variety of materials and topics about Maine. The focus is primarily local, however subjects include information about people, places, and events throughout Maine. Many of these items are one of a kind or no longer available through a publisher.
